Serra de São Mamede · Portalegre · Portugal
Vines aged from 60 to over 100 years in the Serra de São Mamede, making wines with the character of the mountains.
The Vineyard
Souto Escuro lies in the Serra de São Mamede, the São Mamede mountain range near Portalegre, at around 700 metres above sea level. Here we tend old vines, 60 to over 100 years old, their trunks twisted by time and their roots deep in the mountain soil.
The vineyard is full of life: sheep grazing between the vines, hens wandering along the rows and birds' nests hidden in the leaves. We prune vine by vine, following the rhythm of the seasons.
